Kidnappers’ Den Located Near Police Hqtrs
The police in Ondo State has said it had uncovered a kidnappers’ den, located a few metres from the state Police Command headquarters, within Alagbaka Extension area of Akure. The police yesterday took journalists to the house, a three bedroom bungalow, said to have been rented by a gang of kidnappers. The house was said to have been used by some kidnap suspects, two of whom allegedly confessed that they had used the place for various operations, including the kidnap of a lecturer of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). The police said they got to know about the den with the help of a victim. The leader of the suspected kidnapping syndicate, Ogehekwweh Igagah, told newsmen that he was a member of a gang that had been terrorising Delta, Rivers and Ondo States, and that they had effectively used the house rented at N150, 000 per annum for their operations. The visit to the den was preceded by a briefing by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Sannin Magaji, who paraded nine persons, including a 65-year-old-man, Mr. Isaac Suleiman; and his son, Seun, over armed robbery activities in Akungba-Akoko. Magaji said nine exotic cars were recovered from the kidnappers, while about 11 others, ammunition and charms, were recovered from the suspects at their hide-out in Port-Harcourt. He said they also robbed their victims at gun point and later sold the cars to a Port Harcourt-based dealer. The vehicles recovered from the suspects included; One Toyota Avensis that beloned to the Ekiti State government, one black Infinity Jeep, one Toyota Sienna, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry-2003 model, two Toyota Camry-2000 model, Toyota Corolla and one Honda Pilot Jeep. He explained that the police also recovered a sum of N3.3m from the gang that carried a bank robbery operation at Owo Town last month in which two of the robbery suspects and a policeman died. Suleiman, who claimed to be a night guard, denied being a robber, but admitted that his son took away his gun and gave it to his friend, Mr. Kayode Ariyo, who is believed to be a notorious armed robber. However, Magaji said the suspects had on them, locally made pistols, AK 49 rifle, one mask and one HP laptop. He also said one Mercedes Benz 190, one Honda car with registration number Rivers ET 726 PHC, five AK 49 riffles with 11 rounds of live ammunition were also recovered from the robbers. |
